A smart greenhouse is a self-functional, micro-climate-controlled environment for cultivating plants. A greenhouse controls several climatic parameters including temperature, luminosity, humidity, and soil moisture. With the use of sensors and actuators connected to a microcontroller, crops can grow with any human interaction in a smart greenhouse. The entire infrastructure takes care of itself by evaluating changes in climatic conditions and taking corrective actions to enable the optimal growth of crops.

Thanks to the tremendous advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT), the demand and adoption of smart greenhouses is increased. As per the latest research, the global smart greenhouse market would hit $3.23 billion by 2027, registering a CAGR of 11.4% from 2020 to 2027. That’s because of the rise in popularity of organic food, the surge in adoption of vertical farming, and ease of crop monitoring and harvesting.

The world has been dealing with severe climate changes and the frequency of natural calamities is increasing every year. In this case, the cultivation of crops using vertical farming and smart greenhouses has gained importance. One of the most important benefits of smart greenhouses is the 24×7 monitoring of crops without any chance of human error.

Smart greenhouses are equipped with communication technologies and smart sensors that help capture and deliver information regarding crops and surroundings automatically. The gathered data is to feed to the IoT platform where the computer takes care of analysis by running it through algorithms to accurately deal with abnormalities and bottlenecks. Now, irrigation and spraying activities can be regulated by IoT devices, which create a favorable environment for crops. Apart from this, smart greenhouses help in minimizing overall cost as there are less labor work and efficient utilization of resources.

Recently in China, around 40,000-meter square of smart greenhouse has been put into operations, which is expected to produce 1.2 million potted flowers every year. It is said that the smart greenhouse would adopt state-of-the-art greenhouse construction technology and incorporate advanced facilities, including Dutch aluminum gutters, irrigation systems, and water circulation to precisely monitor the greenhouse. It is expected to save labor costs by more than 50%.

Apart from this, one of the global leaders in automotive manufacturing, Mitsubishi Estate, has entered the smart greenhouse industry through a capital partnership with a domestic horticulture firm, Sara.

Sara is a specialist in cutting-edge greenhouse facilities and with the partnership with Mitsubishi, it plans to generate a yearly sale of around $280 million in 10 years. Currently, Sara is involved in growing tomatoes, bell peppers, and lettuce in the smart greenhouses. The entire cultivation area is around 11 hectares and is one of the largest areas in Japan for indoor farming.

With the ever-increasing human population, the demand for indoor farming has surged more than ever. In this case, the benefits of smart greenhouses cannot be ignored. With the integration of artificial intelligence and 5G infrastructure coupled with cloud computing and big data, the future of smart greenhouse is bound to flourish in the coming years. Thus, it is safe to say that the need for well-cultivated fruits and vegetables and increased awareness regarding indoor farming would play a vital role in the growth of the smart greenhouse market in the future.
